IS IT NORMAL FOR MY CHINCHILLA TO EAT ITS Poop?
When you have your new chinchillas, you might notice something amazing: Your chinchillas sometimes bend down to their buttocks as if they are cleaning them and bang: a dropping has actually disappeared into their mouth.
What may seem strange and possibly a bit disgusting to you at first is completely normal: your chinchillas engage in caecotrophy, i.e. they eat their own so-called caecal feces .
This is a special droppings that is covered with a layer of mucus and from which the chinchillas, if they digest it again, can gain a particularly large number of B vitamins and proteins , which they otherwise simply cannot get hold of.
So not only is this normal for your Chins, it's actually very important .
In addition to this appendix feces, there is also the normal large intestine feces , which has passed through all the intestinal stations of your chins.
Your chinchillas will not usually eat this solution.
You see, there is nothing to worry about watching your Chins eat their waste. In fact, it is dangerous for your Chin if it does not or cannot eat its droppings, for example if it has diarrhea. That's why you have to go to the nearest veterinarian quickly if your chinchilla has diarrhea.
By the way, we have a lot of cute merch products for chinchilla owners. Have a look!
